Volunteering can create rewarding experiences, especially when it revolves around a center for community and creativity like the CM Performing Arts Center in Oakdale, NY. My journey began unexpectedly with a routine phone call for an estimate. This simple interaction quickly turned into an adventure filled with creativity, community spirit, and personal fulfillment.
After walking through the CM Performing Arts Center, I quickly realized how much this local gem mattered to the community. The passion for the arts that filled every corner was inspiring. It was in that moment I made a decision that would not only surprise the staff but also enrich my life. I offered my services for free to support local arts.

Getting Started: A Labor of Love
My first task was to remove and install wallpaper in front of the stage and in the lobby area. While it might seem mundane, I took great joy in witnessing the transformation unfold. Every strip of old wallpaper I peeled away was like uncovering layers of history, revealing a fresh canvas for new artistic expression.
As I applied the new wallpaper, the excitement in the air was palpable. This task was about more than just looks; it was about reviving a space where countless memories had been made. With each strip I carefully aligned, I felt a connection to the performances, community meetings, and celebrations that had filled this beloved venue. This center, known for hosting over 100 events each year, serves as a true hub of creativity.

A Return Engagement
My initial project was so fulfilling that I longed for more ways to contribute. I returned to the CM Performing Arts Center to tackle another wallpaper installation. The anticipation grew as we prepared the space for upcoming performances.

This time, discussions with the staff about future events made the task feel even more rewarding. It was about beautifying the venue while enhancing experiences for artists, audiences, and all who step through the doors. A vibrant and inviting space truly uplifts the spirit of those who enter.
Building Connections Through Volunteering
One of the joys of volunteering is the unexpected connections that arise. My work at the center allowed me to meet talented individuals passionate about the arts. I learned about various programs offered, from acting classes attracting more than 50 local students annually to community outreach efforts that engage families throughout the region. It became clear that the CM Performing Arts Center serves as a bridge, connecting the community to the arts.
While volunteering, I also realized the center relied heavily on community support for its programs. To strengthen ties, I requested the center consider donating to Branches Long Island for my upcoming fishing trip. This small initiative aimed to foster community engagement while seeking support. It underscored the idea that community thrives when people come together.
This experience reinforced my belief that everyone has something to offer, be it time, skills, or resources. There’s always a way to give back that resonates with your unique experiences and interests. Small acts can lead to significant change, both for individuals and the community as a whole.
